Brian Bauer, PhD

Brian Bauer, PhD, is an assistant professor of psychology and researcher whose work focuses on understanding and improving mental health decision-making, with a particular emphasis on suicide prevention, behavioral economics, and emerging digital health technologies. He serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Georgia, where he directs a computational research lab focused on suicide prevention and mental health risk detection. His research program is supported by more than $7 million in federal funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Dr. Bauer's research explores how cognitive biases, decision-making processes, and behavioral influences affect help-seeking behaviors and mental health outcomes. His work combines clinical psychology, economics, artificial intelligence, and data science to develop approaches to suicide prevention and mental health promotion. He has published research on suicidality, psychological risk factors, behavioral interventions, and the application of advanced analytical methods - including large language models and digital technologies - to better understand and address mental health challenges.
Beyond his academic research, Dr. Bauer is engaged in innovation and entrepreneurship focused on translating behavioral and data science into practical health technologies. He was selected as a member of the University of Georgia's Faculty Innovation Fellows Program, which supports faculty in advancing commercialization and community impact through research-driven ventures.
Dr. Bauer earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi following completion of his clinical internship at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center. His work bridges academia, healthcare, and technology, and he advises organizations on applying behavioral and data science to develop and bring new health technologies to practice.
